When I lost my job, I felt inadequate and worthless... and the questions that rushed through my head were... Am I ever gonna find another job? How will I pay my bills? Will I lose my car?
What happens to my credit?... Honestly I didn't even know what a credit score was at the time.
It was scary for me but for you... it doesn't have to mean financial disaster. With the right steps, you can protect your credit, keep your finances afloat and set yourself up for a comeback.
You'll be a lot better off than I was. |
How Job Loss Impacts Credit |
The truth is... job loss itself doesn’t show up on your credit report. But what comes after can hurt...
Missed Payments... Even one late payment can knock 100+ points off your score.
Higher Credit Utilization... Using credit cards to survive drives up balances and lowers your score.
Loan Defaults... Without income, car, mortgage or student loan payments can slip.
The danger isn’t losing your job... it’s how you respond. |
What to Do Right Away |
Prioritize Your Essentials... Food, housing, utilities, transportation come first.
Call Your Creditors... Many offer hardship programs, payment pauses or reduced minimums if you ask.
Cut Spending Hard... Cancel subscriptions, scale back to needs only.
Use Savings Sparingly... Stretch your emergency fund with a strict budget.
Avoid Panic Borrowing... Payday loans or cash advances make things worse.
Check Your Credit Weekly... Watch for errors or sudden changes via AnnualCreditReport.com. |

Help When You Need It Most |
Hardship Programs... Ask lenders directly.
Unemployment Benefits... File ASAP with your state’s unemployment office.
Community Resources... Local nonprofits and churches often offer rent/utility support. |
When I finally faced the music and took control of my situation... I realized that there is help. Losing a job isn’t the end. It’s a chapter.
Heaven forbid you lose your job, now you are armed with steps to take to help you protect your credit.
Until next week,
