What I Wish I Knew Before Buying My Timeshare

Credit Coach Rob
Aug 7, 2025
I bought a timeshare thinking it would be an investment in memories, freedom, and upgraded travel. And to be honest... I could afford it. I didn’t take on high-interest debt. I made the payments. I eventually paid it off.
Paying off the loan meant putting my savings, investments, and even parts of my financial growth on hold. And even now that it's paid off, I'm still stuck with annual maintenance fees and club charges I can’t escape... unless I practically give the whole thing away.
The truth is, the salespeople are professionals. They know every psychological trick in the book. They’ll use urgency, guilt, FOMO and even fabricated discounts to make the deal feel too good to pass up.
I fell for it... not because I was careless, but because they’re that good at what they do.
This week, I want to tell you what I wish someone told me before I signed... and how you can protect your credit and long-term wealth. |
The Hidden Cost of Timeshares |
Timeshares are often sold as lifestyle upgrades... but they come with a long-term financial weight that rarely adds real value...

What I'd Do Differently (and What You Can Do Now) |
If I could go back in time, here’s what I’d focus on instead...
✅ Use Credit Strategically... Let rewards, points, and travel cards cover trips without draining your net worth.
✅ Rent Flexibly... Sites like Airbnb or resort flash deals offer premium stays without the lifetime commitment.
✅ Plan With Priorities in Mind... Make sure vacations don’t derail your credit goals, investment plans, or emergency fund. |
Ask Yourself This |

Navigate Time Shares the Smart Way |
My recommendation is to join Time Share groups and learn about second hand timeshares.

I don’t regret wanting better experiences. I regret not asking what those experiences would really cost me. The salespeople made it sound like a deal I couldn’t pass up. And in the moment, I believed them.
If you’re considering a timeshare, ask the hard questions now... before you commit to something that could quietly slow your financial momentum. I got through it. You don’t have to go through it.
Until next week,
