Remember the Pain... Fuel the Progress

Credit Coach Rob
Aug 14, 2025
I can still feel it... the knot in my stomach when I realized I was negative in my back accounts. The shame of saying yes to nights out when my credit cards was maxxed out. The look on my best-friend’s face when I asked for financial help for the n-teenth time and they finally said no.
Those moments sucked. Bad.
But here’s what I’ve learned... revisiting that pain isn’t about punishment. It’s about purpose. Every time I feel tempted to overspend or take the easy way out, I remember how it felt to be broke, stressed, and trapped... and I use it as fuel to stay on track. |
Why Pain Can Be a Powerful Teacher |
Pain creates emotional bookmarks. We remember the times that broke us... and that memory can keep us from repeating the same mistakes.
|
Turn Pain Into a Progress Plan |
Here’s how to channel past mistakes into momentum...
Journal about your lowest financial moments. Include how you felt, what led up to it and the consequences.
Define Your “Never Again” List Create 3 to 5 money situations you’ll never put yourself in again.
Create a Victory Vision Imagine your life when those mistakes are far behind you... debt-free, high credit score, financial freedom.
Revisit Your Why Weekly When temptation hits, remind yourself of where you’ve been and why you refuse to go back. |

Keep Your Motivation Alive |
Track Your Journey Get a journal and write each week about a choice you made that your past self would be proud of.
Use Credit Karma or myFico. It will provide you at the very least 1 credit score that you can track. It's different than an a credit report.
Track Your Payments Create a simple spreadsheet like the one below. This is an example of of what I started with. It all starts with Awareness. Numbers and data have been aren't actuals, but you get the point. (If you actually create a tracker, reply to this email that you did and I'll send you a more in depth one)

When I think back to those ramen-noodle nights and late bills plus fees, I don’t feel ashamed anymore. I feel grateful. That pain pushed me to learn, grow and change. Every time I see my 850 credit score, I know it’s proof that I’ll never go back... and neither should you.
Until next week,
