What are you really shopping for?
Sometimes you're not buying things. You're buying a feeling.

Have you ever bought something you weren't planning to buy...Only to wonder later why you bought it?

Maybe it was... a new gadget, clothes, home décor, another kitchen appliance or something on sale...

The purchase felt good... for a little while.
Then life returned to normal.

Many spending decisions have very little to do with the item itself.

Sometimes we're buying excitement.
Sometimes we're buying comfort.
Sometimes we're buying relief after a stressful day.
Sometimes we're simply bored.

Understanding why you spend is often more important than understanding what you spend.

When do you notice you're most tempted to buy something you don't really need?

For me it's when I'm hungry and at the grocery story 🥺

Spending Oftens Solves an Emotional Problem

Credit cards make buying incredibly easy... Too easy!

One tap.
One swipe.
One click.

The challenge isn't always the credit card.
It's what we're asking the purchase to do for us.

Sometimes spending becomes a shortcut for reducing stress, celebrating success, escaping boredom, feeling accomplished, rewarding ourselves, keeping up with others and the list goes on and on...

The purchase isn't really the goal.

The feeling is.

If you understand the feeling you're chasing, you can often find a healthier and less expensive way to meet that need.

Replace Spending Instead of Simply Resisting It

Trying to stop spending through willpower alone is exhausting.
Replacing the habit is often much easier.

If you're bored... Instead of shopping... read a book, listen to an audiobook, explore a new hobby, take a walk or learn something on Udemy.

If you're stressed... Instead of browsing online stores... exercise, pray or meditate, journal, spend time outdoors or work in the yard.

A calmer mind often leads to better financial decisions.

If you're celebrating... Find rewards that don't become monthly payments.

Celebrate with a family game night, a hike, dinner at home with people you love, visiting a local park or a day trip.

Memories often outlast purchases.

If you're lonely... Connection usually satisfies the heart better than consumption.

Call a friend.
Visit family.
Volunteer.
Invite someone over for coffee.

If you want progress...

Build something.
Learn something.
Create something.

Every hour spent improving yourself is an investment that keeps paying dividends.

What feeling usually comes before one of your impulse purchases?

Replace The Habit Not Just The Purchase

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to eliminate a habit without replacing it.

Nature doesn't like empty space.

Neither do our routines.

If shopping was your outlet...
You need another outlet.

One that leaves you feeling fulfilled instead of financially stretched.

The goal isn't to stop enjoying life.

The goal is to find enjoyment that builds your future instead of borrowing from it.

Build Your "Instead Of" List

Take ten minutes this week and create two columns.

I usually spend when I feel...
bored
stressed
lonely
frustrated
excited
tired

Instead of shopping, I will...
go for a walk
read ten pages of a book
work out
call someone I care about
listen to a podcast
organize a room
spend time with my kids
work on a hobby
save the money toward a meaningful goal

Keep this list on your phone.

The next time you're tempted to buy something, look at it first.

One of the biggest myths in our culture is that buying something new will make us happier.

Sometimes it does.

Most of the time the feeling fades but the payment doesn't.

The happiest people I know don't necessarily own the most.
They have meaningful relationships, purposeful work and healthy habits.

Things they look forward to that don't require a credit card.

Every dollar you don't spend impulsively becomes a dollar you can use intentionally.

Toward your emergency fund.
Toward retirement.
Toward a family vacation.
Toward financial freedom.

Don't just ask yourself...
"Should I buy this?"

Ask something even more powerful...
"What am I really shopping for?"

You may discover the answer has very little to do with the item in your cart.

Reply and tell me...

What's one healthy outlet you've discovered that costs little or nothing but brings you genuine joy?

Until next week,
