The Money Belief That Quietly Put Me in Debt

Credit Coach Rob
Jan 1, 2026
For a long time, I thought I was generous.
I had tied money to love.
Giving gifts. Covering tabs. Helping people out. Spending on others, even when I couldn’t afford it. I believed that giving money was how I showed care, support and value.
The problem was…
That belief quietly pushed me into debt, stress, and financial pressure I didn’t talk about out loud.
This wasn’t a budgeting problem.
It was a relationship problem. |
Your Money Behavior Comes From Beliefs |
We don’t spend money logically.
Your relationship with money is shaped by beliefs you picked up early in life, often without realizing it.
Some common ones...
When money becomes emotional, it shows up in credit behavior...
... Overspending on others
Credit doesn’t reflect how much you care. It reflects how you cope. |
How to Reset Your Money Relationship This Year |
The New Year isn’t about resolutions. It’s about awareness.

You Can Rewrite The Story |
|
Reflect Before Your Reset |
This week’s GTPC Toolbox is about reflection...
Money Story Journal: Write one page on what money represented in your family.
Spending Trigger List: Identify situations where you spend emotionally.
Giving Budget: Decide what generosity looks like without debt.
Weekly Check-In: Ask yourself, “Did my spending align with my values?”
Clarity comes before control. |
Looking back, I didn’t go into debt because I was careless.
And a relationship with money that supports my future instead of sabotaging it.
If you’re starting this year with questions instead of answers, that’s okay.
Awareness is the beginning of every breakthrough..
Until next week,
