The Money Belief That Quietly Put Me in Debt

The Money Belief That Quietly Put Me in Debt
I thought giving money meant love. Turns out, it cost me more than I realized.

For a long time, I thought I was generous.

I thought I was loving.

I thought I was doing the right thing.

But on New Year’s Day, looking back at my finances honestly, I had a realization that stopped me in my tracks.

I had tied money to love.

Giving gifts. Covering tabs. Helping people out. Spending on others, even when I couldn’t afford it. I believed that giving money was how I showed care, support and value.

The problem was…
Sometimes it wasn’t even my money to give.

That belief quietly pushed me into debt, stress, and financial pressure I didn’t talk about out loud.

This wasn’t a budgeting problem.

It was a relationship problem.

Your Money Behavior Comes From Beliefs

We don’t spend money logically.

We spend it emotionally.

Your relationship with money is shaped by beliefs you picked up early in life, often without realizing it.

Some common ones...

... Money equals love
... Money equals success
... Money equals security
... Money equals approval

When money becomes emotional, it shows up in credit behavior...

... Overspending on others
... Carrying balances to avoid discomfort
... Using credit to feel generous or accepted
... Feeling guilt when you say no

Credit doesn’t reflect how much you care. It reflects how you cope.

How to Reset Your Money Relationship This Year

The New Year isn’t about resolutions. It’s about awareness.

Try these steps this week...

Name the belief. Ask yourself what money represented growing up.
Notice your patterns. When do you spend emotionally?
Separate love from spending. Love does not require debt.
Create a giving boundary. Decide what you can give freely and what you cannot.
Pause before swiping. Ask, “Is this aligned with my future or my feelings?”

This isn’t about becoming selfish.
It’s about becoming sustainable.

You Can Rewrite The Story

Real growth starts when you stop judging past behavior and start understanding it.

I don’t beat myself up for how I used money back then.

I see it clearly now.

I wasn’t reckless.

I was trying to be loving.

I just didn’t know how to do that without hurting myself.

When you understand your relationship with money, credit stops being confusing. It starts making sense.

... You don’t fix money problems by working harder. You fix them by thinking differently.

Reflect Before Your Reset

This week’s GTPC Toolbox is about reflection...

Money Story Journal: Write one page on what money represented in your family.

Spending Trigger List: Identify situations where you spend emotionally.

Giving Budget: Decide what generosity looks like without debt.

Weekly Check-In: Ask yourself, “Did my spending align with my values?”

Clarity comes before control.

Looking back, I didn’t go into debt because I was careless.
I went into debt because I believed money was how I showed love.

That belief cost me peace, sleep and progress.
This year, I’m choosing something different.

Love without debt... Generosity with boundaries.

And a relationship with money that supports my future instead of sabotaging it.

If you’re starting this year with questions instead of answers, that’s okay.

Awareness is the beginning of every breakthrough..

Until next week,
