The Joneses Are Broke... You don't need to keep up with them...
Chasing someone else’s lifestyle can cost you your credit and your peace.

Yep... when I was younger, I fell for the trap. I wanted the BMW, the nights out buying rounds, the ultimate karaoke machine, the “look” of success... even when my bank account was near negative. And credit cards? They kept me going.

But here’s the truth... I learned the hard way... the Joneses weren’t rich. They were just as broke as I was. They just looked good doing it. And every time I tried to keep up, I was digging myself deeper into debt.

👉 Have you ever felt that pressure to “keep up”? Hit reply and share with me what that looked like for you... I’d love to hear your story.

Why The Joneses Wreck Your Credit

It’s super easy to think “a little splurge won’t hurt,” especially when you’re comparing yourself to friends, family or coworkers who seem to always be one step ahead. But the hidden costs won't show up right away... they will creep in slowly and before you know it, your credit and future is paying the price.

Here’s how “keeping up” really hits your credit...

Overspending leads to high utilization... Carrying balances close to your limit tanks your score.

Impulse purchases leads to missed payments... When bills pile up, something eventually slips.

Lifestyle inflation leads to debt spiral... More income doesn’t fix it... expenses rise to match.

Your appearance over assets leads to no safety net... Without savings, emergencies lead to more borrowing.

👉 Quick check-in... are you recognizing yourself in any of these patterns? If so, which one feels most familiar?

How to Escape The Comparison Game

Getting out of the “Joneses trap” isn’t about giving up nice things. If you’re honest, chasing other people’s lives leaves you feeling drained and not fulfilled. True progress comes when you choose to compete with the only person that matters... yourself.

Here are steps that help break the cycle...

Define YOUR success by writing down what you want financially... debt freedom, savings, a home... not what others flash on Instagram.

Unfollow triggers... If social media makes you feel “behind,” hit unfollow and protect your peace.

Upgrade slowly and earn the right to upgrade by paying cash and keeping your credit utilization low.

Celebrate your wins... Paid off a card? That’s worth more than a leased car you can’t afford.

Remember... No one’s looking... Most people aren’t paying attention to your shoes or your car... they’re too busy worrying about their own.

👉 If you could define success on your own terms, what would it look like? Reply and share... I’ll feature some answers (anonymously) in a future newsletter.

Ask Yourself This

Reflection is one of the most powerful tools you have. When you pause to ask tough questions, you stop running on autopilot and start taking ownership of your choices.

Be honest, but also be compassionate with yourself... this isn’t about shame, it’s about awareness.

Consider these questions...

Am I spending to impress... or spending to improve my future?

Would I rather look rich now or be financially free later?

What purchase am I still paying for that doesn’t even matter to me anymore?

👉 Which one of these questions hits you hardest today? Reply with your answer... I read every single response.

Stay True to Your Journey

The good news is you don’t have to figure this out on your own. There are tools that help you see your money clearly, stay on track with your goals and remind you that the only comparison that matters is with yesterday’s version of you.

Here are a few that can help...

Budget Calculator: Credit Karma has tools that help you to align spending with your real goals.

Spending Tracker: You can use EveryDollar to spot lifestyle creep.

Journaling Prompt: “What does financial freedom look like for me... not the Joneses?”

I wasted years and thousands of dollars chasing other people’s approval. And you know what? It was for nothing... because approval didn't pay the bills.

My tire actually got flat (I was broke broke) so I couldn't chase the Joneses no more. My advice it to not chase anyone else's dream. Build your own.

👉 I’d love to know what’s one step you’re taking this week to stop comparing and start focusing on your own journey? Reply and share...

I’ll cheer you on.

Until next week,
