What To Do When Your Credit Score Drops Unexpectedly

What To Do When Your Credit Score Drops Unexpectedly
Don’t panic. Every credit drop has a reason—and more importantly, a recovery plan. Coach Rob shows you how to bounce back with confidence.

Ever had that sinking feeling when you check your credit score and it’s dropped... and you are unsure why?

You’re not alone... and you’re not stuck. I’ve been there. Back in college, I was the king of maxed-out cards and missed payments. I went from “free t-shirt with a credit card” to “collections calling me at dinner.” Ok... maybe not collects, but I was close. So I know the panic that comes with a score dip. But I also know how to turn it around and I’m here to walk you through it.

Why Credit Scores Drop

(Even When You're Trying Your Best)

Even small changes can send your score sliding. Here are some of the most common causes...

  • You accidentally missed a payment (even one day late can sting)

  • Your credit utilization climbed above 30%

  • You applied for new credit (each hard inquiry can cost 5–10 points)

  • You closed an old account (which hurts your credit age)

  • A creditor updated a balance or status

  • Identity theft or reporting errors

👉 The key? Don’t guess. Investigate. Your credit report has the answers.

What To Do When Your Score Drops

Step 1: Get ALL Your Reports

Go to AnnualCreditReport.com and download all three: Equifax, Experian, TransUnion. Yep, you're entitled to one free report from each bureau every week.

Step 2: Highlight Any Changes or Flags

Look for the following...

  • New late payments

  • Account balances that jumped

  • New accounts or inquiries

  • Any account you don’t recognize (possible fraud)

📌 Pro Tip from Rob: Highlight anything that changed in the last 30 to 60 days... that’s where the issue usually hides.

Step 3: Fix What You Can

  • Missed a payment? Call the creditor and request a “goodwill removal”... especially if it’s your first slip.

  • High balances? Use your next 2 to 3 paychecks to aggressively pay one card under 30% (or 10% if possible).

  • Errors? Dispute them online. Keep it clear, factual, and upload documentation.

  • Fraud? File a fraud alert and freeze your credit with all three bureaus immediately.

Planning Pays Off

I remember staring at my score after paying off my car loan... and it dropped 15 points. I was confused and pissed. But instead of settling, I studied the system.

I saw that credit is not just about debt... it’s about data points. I stopped reacting and started planning.

Here’s what I want for you: plan, don't panic.

Your score is a mirror of habits... not a judgment of who you are. And you can shape it every month with consistent action.
