Life happens. Maybe you forgot a due date, had an unexpected expense, or simply got overwhelmed with bills. Missing a payment can feel stressful, but the good news is... you can recover! This week, we’ll break down what happens when you miss a payment, how to minimize the damage, and what steps to take to protect your credit score. |
How a Missed Payment Affects Your Score |
Your payment history makes up 35% of your FICO score, so even one late payment can cause a drop—especially if you’ve never missed one before. Here’s how lenders and credit bureaus handle missed payments: 🔴 1–29 Days Late: Most creditors won’t report a payment as “late” to credit bureaus unless it’s at least 30 days overdue. You may get a late fee, but your credit score won’t be affected—yet. 🟠 30+ Days Late: At this point, the creditor will report the late payment to the credit bureaus, and your score could drop by 50–100 points, depending on your credit history. 🟡 60–90 Days Late: The account becomes even more delinquent, late fees pile up, and your score takes a bigger hit. You may receive collection calls or have your interest rate increased. 🔵 120+ Days Late: The creditor may sell your debt to collections, leading to more credit damage. Action Step: If you’ve missed a payment by less than 30 days, pay it immediately to avoid a credit report ding. |
How to Minimize the Damage |
